What Is Short Fill E Liquid?

shortfill, vaping, e-juice

Whether they call it shortfill or Shake n’ Vape e-liquid, it always describes a large bottle of nicotine free vape juice. Why are shortfills called so? Simply because they are not filled to the top. Typically short fill e liquid bottles, unlike 10ml bottles, are filled to 80% of their capacity, in order to customize the vape juice, adding some nicotine shots. You always get 50ml of zero nicotine e-liquid in a 60ml bottle. The bottle sizes can vary from 30ml, to 120ml and even 200ml, and they contain enough space for you to add nicotine shot, if required. And nic shot is a flavourless 10ml bottle of concentrated nicotine, which when mixed with an e cig liquid, will create your perfect strength and end result.

The short fills usually come in different VG/PG ratios and provide an endless gamma of flavour blends, which reflect the tastes of every vaper out there. High VG levels are perfect for blowing clouds while high PG vape juices are known to deliver more intense flavour.

Shortfill E Liquid UK and TPD

shortfill, TPD, vape regultions

Shortfill e liquid helps to bypass the Tobacco Products Directive (TPD), a set of laws which have laid out in the UK vape market since May 2017. This caused a big shakeup in the way vape juices should be produced and sold. The TPD state that e-liquids should not contain more than 20mg (20mg/ml) of nicotine, while the bottles with nicotine containing vape juice were limited to only 10ml in size.

This caused outrage of many manufacturing companies, not to mention vapers, who used to buy big bottles of e-liquids with nicotine level needed.

As short fills do not contain nicotine, they are not covered by these regulations.

How Much Nicotine To Add to 50lm?

nicotine free, nicotine, e-liquid

So, you’ve bough your nicotine shot. But you must have wondered “How much nicotine should I add to my short fill?”. You can add nicotine as you please, and just like any DIY vape juice, it takes a little bit of calculation.

Keep in mind that there are limits on the nicotine strength you can get. Moreover, if you add too much nicotine to your short fill e liquid, you’re going to get poor flavour or too strong throat hit. Here is a small cheat sheet on adding nicotine to zero nicotine e juice.

Nicotine strength may vary in different nic shots. Thus when mixing them with your 50ml short fill you’ll get various strengths.

  • 50ml + 9mg nicotine = 1.5mg nicotine in 60ml
  • 50ml + 12mg nicotine = 2mg nicotine in 60ml
  • 50ml + 15mg nicotine = 2.5mg nicotine in 60ml
  • 50ml + 20mg nicotine = 3.3mg nicotine in 60ml

If you add a full 18mg nic shot to your 50ml flavoured e-liquid, you’ll still end up with a relatively low nicotine level. However, many heavy ex-smokers feel good about 3mg/ml. So if you need an e-juice with more than 10mg/ml nicotine, then you’re probably better off sticking with 10ml prefilled e-liquids.

How To Mix Short Fills?

Luckily, adding nicotine shots to shortfills isn’t rocket science. As you already have all needed calculations, you have a little left to do. Simply remove the top of the bottle, add the nicotine shot, and shake it vigorously for a couple of minutes before using, in order to make sure all the ingredients are mixed properly.

Who Are Short Fills For?

So many smokers keep on switching to the bright side of vaping. And short fills are the greatest choice when it comes to getting rid from nicotine as well. Although vaping is proved to be 95% less harmful than smoking, nicotine is still considered an addictive chemical. Thus vaping a zero nicotine e-liquid means you have won the nicotine dependence.

Shortfills can save your budget as well. Typically people are looking for cheap short fill e liquids and this is possible indeed. Buying short fill e-juices is a cheaper option than buying 10ml pre-mixed bottles of e cig liquid, so while the taste is the same, you’ll be saving some money whenever you stock up.

Shortfills are good for cloud chasers as well, due to the fact that most of shake n’ vape eliquids come with high VG level. Many vapers also feel that smaller bottles lead to more plastic waste and are harmful to the environment.
